You are here. And so am I.
Choreographed to the The Flamingo’s 1959 version of Harry Warren and Al Dubin’s song, I only have eyes for you, and with a visual language which references golden era Hollywood musicals, vaudeville, and the performance style of 1970s black girl groups, the titular video piece centers one a young black woman performing in a dimly lit black space. The performer wears a sheer black body suit which shimmers faintly with gold glitter. Her hands and forearms are covered with elbow length white satin gloves. Her languid performance to the music is interrupted by abrupt cuts in the video’s edit, creating a jittery, stuttering effect. A wall of artificial flowers is visible as white feathers float in slow motion across the screen. As the work builds to its conclusion, one of these flowers emerges from the mouth of the performer.
